jazz

mammoth rant

Great show last night at Douglass Street Music Collective: Mike Pride's From Bacteria to Boys, the Nate Wooley Quintet, even though you're only 9. It was very jazzy - "jazzy" - whatever. I mean, composed pieces that swing occasionally and involve chords that are in some way interpreted by soloists. Speaking broadly, I can't stand "modern" jazz, I really like most things recorded before 1975, I only play jazz with close friends, etc.

calamity!

NO MUSICIANS ON 2009 MACARTHUR GRANTEES LIST

No musicians won the "genius" grant this year! Oh snap! I am very excited to see the fallout from this. I wonder if it will be like the "jazz is dead" experience a month or two ago, when an article by Terry Teachout in the the Wall Street Journal pointed out that, according to a totally preposterous survey, everybody who listens to jazz is close to death. And white. Or something like that. There was, to be sure, a lot of interesting debate and well-thought-out opinions about this, from Darcy Argue and Nate Chinen and a whole host of folks, but really - who cares? Jazz is dead, long live jazz. Just play - or write - some fucking music.
